UK: about 3 weeks, 5 working days with priority. Ireland: 4 to 8 weeks. Canada: 4 to 12 weeks. US: interview-based, usually decided on the day but appointment waits vary. Australia: 2 to 8 weeks. Germany: 4 to 12 weeks after an appointment that can take months to get. Apply as early as the rules allow.

The UK allows dependants only for postgraduate research students and government-sponsored students since January 2024. Canada limits spouse work permits to master's and PhD students. Not directly from a student visa anywhere. The usual path is study, then a post-study work visa, then an employer-sponsored or points-based work visa, then residence after a qualifying period. Canada and Australia have the clearest routes; the UK requires five years on qualifying visas.
