How the New Zealand education system works
Overview
Universities, polytechnics and private training establishments all award qualifications on the ten-level New Zealand Qualifications Framework.
Levels and how long they take

| Diploma | 1 to 2 years | Levels 5 and 6. |
| Bachelor's | 3 years (4 with honours) | Level 7, honours at Level 8. |
| Postgraduate diploma | 1 year | Level 8, often a bridge into a master's. |
| Master's | 1 to 2 years | Level 9. |
| PhD | 3 to 4 years | Level 10, at domestic fees. |
Grading
A+ to E letter scale; a B average is typically needed for postgraduate entry.

How long can I stay in New Zealand after studying?
Up to three years on the Post-Study Work Visa if you complete a bachelor's degree or higher. Some lower-level qualifications qualify for shorter periods only if they are on the Green List.
How much money must I show for a New Zealand student visa?
NZ$20,000 a year for living expenses (NZ$1,667 a month for shorter periods) plus evidence that tuition is paid or funds to pay it.
