University halls
Run by the university, on or near campus, usually bills included, with a first-year guarantee at many universities for international students who apply by the deadline. Cheapest for what you get and the easiest first landing. Contracts run 40 to 51 weeks.
Private student halls
Purpose-built blocks run by companies, with studios and en-suite rooms, gyms and study rooms. More expensive than university halls, well located, and the most common option in cities like Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin. Contracts are long and cancellation is limited unless your visa is refused, so check the visa-refusal clause before paying.
Shared houses
A room in a house with other students, rented from a private landlord or agent. Cheapest per month in most cities, bills usually extra, and you need to be in the country to view. Best from second year onwards. Always check the landlord is registered and the deposit goes into a government-backed scheme (UK), and never pay a deposit to someone you have only met online.
Homestays
A room in a local family's home with some meals included. Good for younger students and for the first term; more structure, less independence. Common in Canada, Australia and Ireland.
Before you sign
- Confirm the contract length and the cancellation policy if your visa is refused or delayed.
- Check what is included: heating, internet, contents insurance, cleaning.
- Ask for the room's exact location and distance to campus, not the marketing photos.
- Pay only through the provider's official portal; scams targeting international students are common every summer.
