Study gaps
Most UK universities accept a gap of up to two years for undergraduate and five years for postgraduate study with a simple explanation. Longer gaps are accepted where you can show relevant work experience. The visa officer cares more than the university: a gap must make sense in the story your statement tells.
Backlogs
A backlog is a module you failed and later passed. Many modern universities accept up to 10 to 15 backlogs at postgraduate level provided the final degree percentage meets the entry requirement and all backlogs are cleared. How to explain
One short paragraph in the statement of purpose or a separate gap letter: what happened, what you did in the time, and why it makes you a better candidate now. Illness, family responsibility, work, a business, exam preparation and financial delay are all acceptable reasons. Provide evidence: employment letters, medical certificates, business registration. Do not hide a gap; the passport and transcripts reveal it anyway.
