Fully funded scholarships exist and they are hard to win. Partial awards of £2,000 to £10,000 are common and often automatic. Plan on the second kind and apply for the first.
The honest picture
Chevening, Fulbright, DAAD and Commonwealth scholarships fund a few thousand students a year worldwide, out of millions who apply to study abroad. They are worth applying for if you meet the criteria, usually academic excellence plus work experience or leadership. But the money most of our students actually receive comes from the universities themselves.
Automatic university awards
Most UK, Irish and Australian universities discount international fees for strong grades, and many do it automatically at offer stage. Typical: £2,000 to £5,000 a year in the UK for 60 to 70 percent or above; 10 to 25 percent at top-ranked UK universities for higher grades; 20 to 50 percent in Australia. Early-payment discounts of 5 to 10 percent and alumni or sibling discounts add up. Ask us which universities on your shortlist pay the most for your grades; the difference can be £10,000 over a degree.
Government scholarships
- Chevening (UK): full master's funding; two years' work experience; apply by November for the following September.
- Commonwealth Scholarships (UK): for eligible countries, in development-related subjects.
- GREAT Scholarships (UK): £10,000 at participating universities for specific countries including India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Ghana and Kenya.
- DAAD (Germany): monthly stipends for master's and PhD.
- Fulbright (US): fully funded graduate study.
- Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship: €10,000 plus fee waiver.
- Stipendium Hungaricum: full funding in Hungary for partner countries.
- Erasmus Mundus: full scholarships for joint European master's.
Country and subject schemes
Many universities run awards for specific countries (India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Vietnam) or subjects (STEM, women in engineering, sport). They are less competitive than the national schemes because fewer people know about them. We keep a live list for our partner universities.
How to apply
- Apply to the university early: most scholarships are allocated from January onwards for September and run out.
- Check whether the award is automatic or needs a separate form and essay.
- Write the scholarship essay as you would a statement of purpose: specific, honest, forward-looking.
- Keep proof of every award for your visa financial evidence; a scholarship letter reduces the funds you must show.
