January intake in the UK: which universities offer it and how to apply in time

The January intake is a full second chance for students who missed September. Here is who offers it, the deadlines, and how the visa timeline works.

A third of our students start in January. Most of them missed September because a result came late, a loan took longer than planned, or they decided in August. None of it costs them the degree.

Why January exists

Modern UK universities run two full intakes for popular master's and many undergraduate programmes: business, computing, data, engineering, management, health and marketing. Teaching is identical; the calendar simply starts in January and ends the following December or January.

Who offers it

Among our partner universities, Birmingham City University, Leeds Beckett, Liverpool John Moores, Edinburgh Napier, Abertay, Swansea and Aston run January intakes across many postgraduate programmes; Loughborough London, Glasgow, Southampton, Brighton and Exeter offer it on a smaller set. Russell Group universities usually restrict January to specific master's.

Deadlines

  • Apply by late October for a January start; some universities accept until mid-November.
  • Deposit and CAS by early December.
  • Visa application by early to mid-December for a mid-January arrival; priority processing helps.

Differences from September

Course choice is narrower and some scholarships are smaller. Accommodation is easier to find because September tenants have settled. Graduation is in the winter after your course, and the Graduate Route timing follows your course end date, not the calendar year. If you are reading this in September or October and want to start this January, the Express Offer route is built for exactly that.
