The Immigration Health Surcharge: what it costs, what it covers and how to claim a refund

The IHS gives you the NHS on the same terms as a UK resident. Here is how it is calculated and when you can get money back.

What it costs

£776 for each year of your visa, charged at the visa application. Part years count as a full year if over six months and half a year if under. A one-year master's usually gets a visa of about 16 months, so the charge is typically £1,164. A three-year bachelor's is usually £2,716.

What it covers

Full access to NHS GP services, hospital treatment, emergency care, maternity care and mental health services without further charge, exactly as a UK resident. You still pay for prescriptions in England (£9.90 per item in 2026, free in Scotland and Wales), dental treatment and eye tests. Register with a GP in your first week; you will need it for anything that is not an emergency.

Refunds

Refunded automatically if the visa is refused or withdrawn. Partial refunds apply if you leave the UK early and your visa is curtailed. EU students with a European Health Insurance Card may reclaim it. There is no refund for not using the NHS.
