Cost of living

Cost of living in the UK for international students in 2026, city by city

Realistic monthly budgets for London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, Leeds and Cardiff, with the fixed costs students forget.

The official visa figure of £1,136 a month outside London is close to what a careful student actually spends. London costs more than the £1,483 the visa assumes, especially in the first year.

Where students overspend

Food delivery apps, weekly train trips to London, and mobile contracts that cost £40 when a £10 SIM does the same. The single biggest saving is a room with bills included, booked before you arrive; short-term hotel stays while searching cost students £1,000 or more every September. Our accommodation team books rooms before you fly for exactly this reason. Council tax does not apply to full-time students; make sure you claim the exemption.
